How it all started
Rockefeller in Ocean View
4pm – 6pm Ocean View Beach Park
The idea began with a simple observation; Ocean View neighborhood did nothing for Christmas as a community. We are fortunate to enjoy an impressive park, staging and the natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay. The Ocean View Civic League board met and shared in an idea to start a neighborhood Christmas celebration. Thus began what hopes to be a long tradition in our area of Norfolk. Permits, insurance and all necessary documentation are purchased with financial help from local civic leagues, personal donations and businesses.
The gazebo is home to a fresh 16-foot pine, purchased from Brite Farms in Pungo. One week before Thanksgiving, volunteers gather to erect and decorate the tree. With cooperation from Ocean View and Willoughby Elementary schools, the art teachers help the children make an assortment of ornaments to be added the day of celebration.
Our master of ceremonies is radio personality from WHRO public broadcasting, Raymond Jones. Music is provided by DJ Ronald Bennington. Tables are set up in the park by civic leagues, garden clubs, churches and businesses with treats and hot chocolate, all free to participants. WHRO brings the youth education van and distributes free books to children. Santa arrived last year by Firehouse 13. He is then responsible for lighting the tree and begins to hear the wishes of the children.
New for 2016 our 5th Year, web domain has been donated for our event, we are currently creating our web page www.rockefellerinoceanview.
The tree stays lit every night until the epiphany.
